ONE OF OUR BETTER COUNTRY SALES featuring Early & Country Smalls & Furniture from The Estate of Elizabeth “Betsy” Calvert of Queensbury NY, Country Smalls & Furniture from the living estate of a Malta NY woman prominent in the local antiques world, and more of the same from the collections found in an early Washington County farmhouse. A very nice sale – come & enjoy! (NOTE: Betsy Calvert’s considerable Jewelry & costume jewelry will be in our Dec 6th sale.) Children are NOT allowed.

HISTORIC 1821 WATERCOLOR (sold at 6pm): an evocative 7 1/2” x 12” watercolor of 2 tri-masted sailing ships flying the US flag with harbor and town in the distance prominently titled “The U. States Frigate Constitution and Sloop of War Ontario off Algiers on the 14th of November 1821”, SOLD TOGETHER WITH a 12” x 17” watercolor by the same hand of the same period depicting 2 large 3 masted ships prominently flying the US flag and a smaller 2 masted ship also flying the US flag. Both of these watercolors are believed to have been painted by merchant marine Captain Augustus Proal whose long and distinguished career at sea began in 1818 and culminated as the Captain of the ship “Harkaway”. PROAL FAMILY PORTRAITS: 25 1/2" x 20 1/2" o/c portrait of Capt Augustus Proal (1801-1879). 36” x 29 1/2" o/c portrait of Pierre Alexis Proal (1796-1857) eldest of the 12 Proal children and Rector of St George in Schenectady from 1830-1836 – some thought this portrait by Ezra Ames of Albany. 28” x 22” o/c portrait of Susan Breese Proal (1802-1864) a noted beauty with a Livingston family connection and second wife of Pierre Proal. 28” x 22” portrait of Jacob Stout, first husband of Susan. ALL OF THE ABOVE being sold for a descendent of the Proal family.
 
BETSY CALVERT’S SAMPLERS: 12+ 19thC American samplers inherited or collected by Betsy include examples from 1810 up with buildings, birds & animals, trees & florals, the “Tower of Babylon” and other interesting images. ALSO: attractive Wooly of 3 masted sailing ship. Needlework pictorial of Job and Isaac on Mount Moriah. 19thC needlework and watercolor on silk image of gent and lady in countryside.

Good looking pine & poplar 2 tone c.1850 country chest/cupboard w/3 drawers over 2 cabinet doors (w/inlaid star wooden drawer pulls). Y base Empire mahogany fold-over game table. Early rockers incl ladder back w/arms in orig reddish varnish. Several tiger maple cane seat chairs. Small dt blanket box on dt base w/orig blue under Victorian orange/yellow. BEDS: particularly fine pair cherry cannonball top 4 post twin rope beds w/rails extended to modern length. 5’8” cherry turned 4 post rope bed (used with ¾ box spring & full size mattress). Cannonball top 4 post rope bed w/tiger maple headboard (modern rails to be used with full double size mattresses). GRANDFATHER CLOCKS: particularly nice mahogany cased tall clock w/original signed JNo Leslie Kirkaldy floral painted face, the bonnet top w/broken arch & pediment crest w/cast  brass spread wing eagle finials (running!).
